All about Magical Moringa Beauty Balm

Renowned beauty oils create magic

We travelled to the ends of the earth in search of the world’s most renowned beauty oils to create this gorgeous beauty balm.

A little melting pot of loveliness, Magical Moringa is rich and waxy at first touch, but leaves no residue when you apply it to your face. Warm a little bit between your fingers or work it straight into the skin, and it’ll transform into a silky oil that’s quickly absorbed to leave your skin matte, velvety soft and perfectly primed for makeup.

The perfect blend

Despite how light and smooth Magical Moringa feels, this balm is packed full of balancing oils and soothing butters to nourish the skin. Each pot has sustainably sourced argan, moringa, rose hip, ylang ylang, vetivert and sandalwood oils, as well as creamy fair trade organic cocoa butter, smoothing organic shea butter and silky cornflour. Rowena Bird, Lush co-founder and inventor, explains that the combination of these moisturizing butters, oils and cornflour gives Magical Moringa a beautiful texture that “holds the [product] in place on your face, meaning that these beautiful ingredients are really put to use when you apply them to your skin.”

Creating a flawless canvas

A lover of color and makeup, Rowena is also keen to stress that Magical Moringa works beautifully with makeup: “Often when you wear makeup it will slip during the day, but this makes a complete difference to the amount of foundation you remove in the evening.” (For a magical combination, try applying a color supplement on top of your Magical Moringa. Color supplements are packed with natural ingredients to create a beautifully fresh-feeling base that can be used as foundation or concealer.)

Gorgeous ingredients

Rose hip oil: As well as helping makeup last for longer, the rich beauty oils in Magical Moringa are revered by different cultures for their versatile benefits to the body. Take rose hip oil, for example, a rich, rejuvenating oil obtained from the seed of the rose by cold pressing, and widely regarded as the beauty oil of South America. “If you travel around South America,” Rowena says, “you would see rose hip oil in all the products – it’s like the cure-all for everything.” This non-greasy oil absorbs quickly into the skin, and is loved for its thirst-quenching properties on the face and body. It’s also used in cooking and is infused to make a cleansing drink.

Moringa oil: There’s a reason this is named after Africa’s “miracle plant”. Most ingredients from the moringa tree aren’t just edible, but so nutritious that they’re regarded as superfoods and used to treat malnutrition. For decades, people have even applied the oil to their skin benefiting from its soothing, softening properties. A network of farmers in Northern Uganda use regenerative farming methods to cultivate this beautiful ingredient, and help replenish a land that’s suffered through the devastation of a civil war. Growing moringa for our products gives many a chance to thrive, grow and find a long-term solution for supporting their families and their communities for generations to come.

Argan oil: Argan oil has been used by women for years to beautify their skin and hair; until recently, it was Morocco’s best-kept secret. Despite its recent popularity in hair products, treating the skin to a dose of this restorative, vitamin-rich oil makes perfect sense. The Moroccan argan trade is closely monitored in the region of Agadir, and a union of 22 village cooperatives produces the oil while working towards organic and fair trade certification. Each order is handled by one village group from start to finish, ensuring each batch can be traced back to its source and that freshness standards are maintained.

Shea and cocoa butter: Magical Moringa contains two gorgeously skin-softening ingredients to butter you up. Creamy organic shea butter from a women’s cooperative in Ghana complements the skin’s natural sebum and helps draw nutrients deeper. This cream-colored fat is rich in vitamins A, E and F to protect and revitalize the complexion, as well as bind ingredients together, especially when combined with deeply hydrating cocoa butter. The fair trade organic cocoa butter used in Magical Moringa Moisturizer comes from an umbrella organization of small producers in the Dominican Republic. The Organic Growers Dominican Foundation (FUNDOPO) secures fair trade prices for farmers who produce high quality cocoa butter sustainably and ethically, as well as ensures that these remain consistent. Buying from small producers also helps us ensure that we’re not supporting a business that engages in animal testing or child labor.

“Miracle” creams might only exist in ads, but there’s certainly a bit of magic going on in this little pot. Uniting renowned beauty oils from different cultures packs a lot of global expertise into one product by treating your skin to the tried and tested cosmetic secrets of communities across the globe. Products like Magical Moringa also prove that how cosmetic ingredients are sourced makes a huge difference to all involved: at one end, farmers earning a consistently fair wage can improve the quality of their product and provide for their families, and on the other, high quality ingredients grown in sustainable conditions ensure that the products you use are always the best available. It’s a balancing act revolving constantly around our motto: what’s inside counts.
