How to Do an At-home Facial

Six steps to glowing skin

If it’s luxury at home you seek, treat yourself to a relaxing facial.

You’ll love the way your skin looks and feels when you take a bit of time to give your face some loving attention. Just follow these six easy steps and you’ll be on your way to the freshest face ever!

1. Cleanse

Why: Cleansing removes dirt, excess oil and other debris from your skin so that the next products you use will be as effective as possible.

What to use: We make a wide variety of facial cleansers, like the bestselling Angels on Bare Skin. Whether you want to exfoliate, brighten, soothe or hydrate your skin as you wash, we’ve got something for you. Check out How to Choose your Facial Cleanser to find the perfect companion for your skin.

2. Exfoliate

Why: Exfoliating removes dead skin cells that have accumulated on the surface of the skin. These dead cells can sometimes block pores causing blackheads and breakouts. Regular exfoliation can also help unblock pores that cause in-grown hairs. If you’re using a cleanser or mask that is also exfoliating you can skip this step.

What to use: Polish skin with beneficial essential oils and ingredients. For an invigorating exfoliation try Ocean Salt Face And Body Scrub which will leave your skin feeling bright and radiant with gently exfoliating sea salts and uplifting citrus.

Top tip: Not all exfoliants are the same, some use ground almonds, rice, sea salts, and more. Depending on your skin type and needs, we recommend you listen to your skin and take into careful consideration the texture of the exfoliant.

3. Facial massage

Why: Facial massage is incredibly relaxing, promotes skin elasticity and can jumpstart its natural detoxifying processes.

What to use: Our favorite facial massage medium is Full of Grace Facial Serum, which packs a seriously nourishing punch: tropical murumuru and cupuaçu butters give your skin a hydrating boost while rose oil and calamine powder soothe any irritation.

How to: Pat your face dry after you exfoliate, apply the serum to your whole face by stroking upwards from your chin and along either side of your nose until you reach your forehead. From here, stroke downwards along your hairline and down your jawline until you arrive back at your chin. Repeat several times, then knead your forehead and cheeks gently with small circles.

4. Apply a face mask

Why: Lush masks are handmade with fresh ingredients, selected in specific combinations and proportions to have unique effects on the skin. Whatever effect you’re after, we’ve got you covered!

What to use: Visit your local Lush shop to explore our wide variety of fresh face masks: these are only available in stores because they need to be kept refrigerated! Don’t worry if you’re not close to a Lush shop—Mask Of Magnaminty, Cup O´ Coffee and Beauty Sleep are fabulous, shelf-stable masks that you can buy online. Check out our guide on choosing the perfect fresh face mask to learn about each mask’s unique benefits.

How to: Without washing or wiping off Full Of Grace, take a generous scoop of your face mask and spread a thick layer all over your face, avoiding your eyes and mouth. Relax for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off with warm water. If your mask has any scrubby bits, gently massage as you rinse to exfoliate your skin.

5. Tone

Why: Giving your face a once-over with a toner-dampened cotton pad removes any remaining product, hydrates skin and prepares it for moisturizer.

What to use: Tea Tree Water is great on oilier skin, with cleansing tea tree oil and gently astringent grapefruit to keep skin matte and clear. Breath of Fresh Air is refreshing and calming on all skin types, full of sea water, soothing aloe vera and softening seaweed. Eau Roma Water is our gentlest, most hydrating toner, and has a simple recipe with rose and lavender infusions to calm irritated or dry skin.

How to: Spritz your toner onto a cotton pad and swipe over your face, or simply mist your face with the toner.

6. Moisturize

Why: Moisturizing is important after cleansing, and especially after using a deep-cleansing face mask. It replenishes your skin’s oils and keeps it soft and supple. And don’t forget that oily skin needs moisture, too!

What to use: We carry a diverse range of moisturizers, each formulated to address different skin needs. If you need a hand navigating our moisturizers, visit your local shop or see our How to Choose Your Moisturizer article.

How to: Take a small dab of moisturizer and pat it gently into your toner-dampened skin.
