Xylitol

A sugar alcohol that cannot be fermented by bacteria. It's antibacterial and reduces how much acid is formed in the mouth from the ingestion of glucose and causes the overall reduction of anaerobic bacteria in saliva and plaque. It's found naturally in birch sap, an ancient mouth care ingredient used by Native Americans by chewing it like gum.
