1. Place your treatment in a heatproof container and boil some water in a kettle. 2. Slowly add several ounces of boiling-hot water to the solid treatment and stir gently using the wooden stick. Take your time, adding water as needed, and allowing the product to thicken until you're left with an empty stick and a rich, creamy treatment. This should take around five minutes. 3. When it's cool enough to touch, apply to dry hair and leave for around 20 minutes to allow the ingredients to get to work replenishing your hair. Shampoo out and admire your luscious locks! Made too much? Keep your mix for conditioning top-ups for up to four weeks.

Storage Keep your hot oil treatment somewhere clean and dry until you're ready to use it. In hot weather, store in the fridge to avoid meltdowns.

Happy I didn't read the reviews

I happened across this in the lush store, and did not check the reviews online. I have been on a search for a good hot oil treatment for my extremely dry scalp and damaged hair. I read the reviews once I already had it in my hair, and got super nervous. It turned out fine! It rinsed out without an issue, didn't leave my residue in my hair, my hair is super moisturized and healthy looking. The only complaint I have is the smell, I cant put my finger on it, but it definitely smells like some chemical I've had in my hair before. Be warned, they smell so much better solid than they do once melted, but Ill have meh scented hair to not be running around flaking everywhere.

New Formula is awful

I used to use this product religiously once a week but then stopped when the pandemic hit. Recently I restarted using it again but the formula is all off and has a weird smell. On top of that, I felt like it was difficult to get out and did absolutely nothing for my hair. Super disappointed in the new formula and will not be buying again.

Why did you change it!

I am so glad I came here to read these comments. I fully agree that this is like using slime. The original formula was amazing. I used to get 3 uses out of one stick. Now I try to use it and it is like kids slime on my hair. I am so disappointed and will NOT be using this product again. If it ain't broke then don't try to fix it!!!

Why did you ruin a good thing?

I used the old damaged formulation once a week. It left my hair feeling fabulous. Everyone would ask me how I keep my long hair so gorgeous and comment on the shine. This new product is impossible to apply and turns into a horrible goop. It's so frustrating. Please go back to the old formula. I'm sad to say this but Lush, you have ruined a good thing.

Made my hair feel so soft and rejuvenated

The hot oil treatment was slimy and it didn't smell great but it did wonders with my hair! I left it in for about 30 minutes and it started to harden into wax. However, this was easy to wash out of my hair and my hair felt so replenished and soft.

Really awful experience

I'm a first time Lush customer, and I was so excited to try this product. My first complaint is the smell...it was VERY fishy smelling, and has taken DAYS to get the smell out of my hair even with repeated shampooing. Honestly, just gross. I'm not sure how any product that smells like this can be being sold. As far as effectiveness, I actually feel like my hair is significantly dryer and more frizzy after using this...it feels like it actually damaged my hair instead of repairing it! I could not be any more disappointed, and definitely do NOT recommend this product.

They reformulated this and it's terrible!!

I started off using the Tangled hot oil treatment until they discontinued it then started using Damaged. The old formula was great and very creamy and moisturizing and I loved it. I'm gonna guess that the new formula which now includes avocado is the reason why it is now green and turns into this big ball of slime after adding the hot water and smells terrible. I couldn't even put it in my hair. I thought I was trippin the first time so I bought another one and the same thing happened. I'm so disappointed.

It was fun to make...

The previous reviews were correct. It started off okay as it cooled it was slimy, it became almost stringy between my fingers. I put it in while it was still warm, it felt nice going on, hydrating while it was soaking in, but I washed it out and felt no different. It did have a bit of a fishy smell. It did come out okay for me with hot water and no shampoo, but my hair felt the same as when I put it in. I am curly, so maybe my hair just needs something more...

Worked as expected

My hair had grown tired and dry due to damage. I used this product and the hydration effect was instant. My hair ends became shiny and moisturised after washing it away with shampoo. Really happy with results !

The new formula is not for me

I went into Lush to purchase 2 hot oil treatments. I have been using the Damaged hot oil treatment for over 5 years now. When I saw the employee pick them up I immediately noticed the green color. I asked when and what changed that it is now green. He read the ingredients noting the addition of argon oil. He said if I did not like it I could return it. When I got home a read a number of negative reviews on the new formula but still decided to try it for myself. Like others mentioned, the texture is definitely more slimy than creamy. There was a slight odor to mine once I added the hot water (although I know it is not lye that is the closest scent I can compare it to). I usually keep mine in overnight and decided to use as I normally do. I had some scalp irritation that I have never had before. Also like others mentioned, it was difficult to rinse out even after a shampoo. It left a film on my hair. After I finally got it all out, my hair felt good but not as good as it has with the original formula. I plan to return the second one I purchased. Unfortunately, this is the only Lush product I use so I most likely won't be returning for future purchases. I am disappointed because I really loved the damage hot oil treatment, I have used it faithfully since I have gone relaxer-free.
