The Opaskwayak Culture & Healthy Living Initiatives (OCHLI) started community gardens, raspberry patches and orchards as a way of addressing ongoing health issues related to historical impacts to the First Nation. The garden events have created and strengthened rich community learning and familial connections. Meals, stories and educational materials are shared. People are rediscovering their agrarian heritage and once again able to eat healthy foods and exercise as ways to address high diabetes rates in the community.
How we helped
The donation from Lush will help to furnish a summer kitchen at the main community garden. The kitchen will provide a space to prepare food, hold teaching seminars, community meals and other events. The donation will also be used to purchase several bee hives.
