Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund

CELDF is pioneering a rights-based approach to protect communities and nature, assisting the first U.S. communities to establish the Rights of Nature in law. Further, CELDF assisted Ecuador to draft Rights of Nature constitutional provisions. Ecuador is the first country to recognize constitutional Rights of Nature. Today, CELDF is working in Nepal, India, the E.U., and other countries to advance Rights of Nature legal frameworks. Such laws for the first time recognize that ecosystems possess the legal right to exist and thrive.
