Plastic Pollution Coalition

Plastic Pollution Coalition (PPC) is a global alliance of individuals, organizations, businesses and policymakers working toward a world free of plastic pollution and its toxic impact on humans, animals, the ocean and the environment. PPC provides a platform to amplify effective strategies and creative common messaging in order to advance sustainable solutions. Our digital and social networking tools empower people and organizations to take action against single-use plastic and to live plastic-free. PPC facilitates projects with partner organizations to enhance awareness and reduce the effects of plastic pollution, specifically focused on health, education, the arts, legislation and litigation.

How we helped

The Skip the Straw Campaign is designed to be simple, iconic and inspiring. It’s one easy action each of us can do in our daily lives to reduce single-use, disposable plastic, and demonstrate how we collectively make a real and powerful difference. Over 500,000,000 plastic straws are used every day in the United States. They are tossed immediately after use, instantly becoming waste. The phenomena of drinks being served with plastic straws is a shift that has taken place in the past twenty years. It's an extreme example of waste being generated for an object of minimal use, and one where recycling isn’t a viable answer. Our campaign aims to activate citizens through a grassroots campaign that brings awareness to the problem and encourages individuals everywhere to make one simple behavior change – to ask their server to ‘skip the straw’ before they are served. Combining the power of our social media with the video shorts we’ve produced, we believe we can reach the tipping point to bring an end to knee-jerk, automatic plastic straw use. We’re eager to continue developing more videos to expand our campaign through grassroots efforts.
