Ban the Seal Hunt

End Canada’s license to kill

Each year the government of Canada allows the largest slaughter of marine mammals on earth: the commercial seal hunt.

The hunt needlessly claims the lives of hundreds of thousands of baby harp seals, 98% of which are younger than 3 months old. Since 2002 more than 2 million seals have been killed, their soft white pelts sold to the fashion industry to create fur trim, gloves and hats. We simply could not stand by while this cruel practice continued.

The Campaign

In 2009 and in partnership with Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, we asked customers and staff to sign a petition addressed to Prime Minister Harper demanding a ban on Canada’s commercial seal hunt. We also created a limited edition bubble bar called First Swim with 100% of the purchase price being donated to Sea Shepherd.

The Outcome

Our in-shop and online petitions collected nearly 48,000 signatures in favor of a federal ban on the commercial seal hunt in Canada. Over 5,500 First Swim Bubble Bars were sold, resulting in a $37,000 donation to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for their work in conserving and protecting marine ecosystems and species.

The demand for harp seal products has been steadily decreasing in the global market with dozens of countries banning their import. Pelt prices continue to fall, but the fight isn’t over. Get up to date information and take action to end the seal hunt at Humane Society International’s website.
