I struggled with zits on my back and chest. Dark Angels succeeded renewing my oily skin. I've used other products that I did and did not work. Dark Angels far surpasses them because I love the smell the exfoliating, the black color lets me know I've used it evenly, and my skin feels incredibly refreshed afterward. Thanks LUSH!!!

Picked this up at lush and bought 90 grams which was way to much.

Used this product for about a month and really no improvement in my skin... It's great for exfoliating but other than that nothing special. It did not clear up my acne which was dissapointing but oh well.

It smells like black licorice, which I don't mind but I would prefer something more floral.

A bit messy to use. I found it best to use in the shower. If you can't use it in the shower then I suggest filling your sink up with water and using it over that because otherwise I found it stuck to the sink and you had to scrub it off. This way you just drain the water after and give the sink a quick rinse.

I just used this for the very first time, and my skin already feels amazing! I LOOOOOVEEE IT. I work at a popular fast food chain; I just came home after a nice long split shift (closing the grill, of all things), and said "Hey, this is supposed to suck up all the ickiness on my face!" so I finally used it, and holy moly, my face feels amazing. A lot of reviews said that it doesn't smell good and that it's super messy, but I didn't find that at all. It doesn't smell amazing like some of the bath bombs from Lush (obviously, it's made from charcoal), but it's definitely not unbareable like some people have been saying, but I suppose it's different for everyone. Also, the messiness of it would have to do with how much you use, and whatnot, because I barely made a mess at all! I would recommend this to a friend, 100%.

I use Dark Angels once or twice a week when my skin needs a deep scrub. It is a great exfoliator and manages to soak up oil without drying out my skin. It is messy, and when I use it in the tub it turns my water black, but a little goes a long way and with enough hot water it rinses off my skin easily. It is too harsh for daily use, but when my skin is acting out, this works.

I went to Markville Mall today and picked up this product. Came home and washed my face with it. Yes it was messy but I got the hang of it quickly. It scrubbed off my make up and all my dry skin I had and even lightened up the dark spots already. I'm seeing the pimples below coming to the surface but that just means it's pulling out the bacteria. But my skin looked like it's been stripped clean! By the way, use a washcloth to take it off to get it all off. I have oily and dry skin (go figure how that can work). I used the tree tree water after which was nice as it cleaned up any remaining coal. My skin felt smooth but a touch dry. I then applied Imperialis but my previous dry patches still felt dry so I then applied to Vanishing Cream (got a sample of this) which make it feel soft and smooth. So I think I will return the Imperialis and buy the vanishing cream.

When I go back tomorrow, I may pick up a mask also. So far so good. Loving it! Since I lost my sense of smell, I can't comment on it but with the results so far, I'd probably hold my breath and use it. Lol

I personally love this cleanser! First off, I have a mix of combination/dry skin/ black heads/ problem-prone skin and I've honestly been having a lot of trouble trying to find a skin care routine that would be effective, yet wouldn't leave my skin feeling very dry. Therefore, I use this cleanser in the morning (using ultrabland at night as an end-of-the-day cleanser) and I really love its effect. The blend leaves the skin feeling smooth yet not too irritated but does help exfoliate effectively! Some reviews may say that it smells a little funky... to each his own - I personally LOVE the smell. It's true that it is a tiny bit messy but it's also very easy to clean it off the bathroom sink and doesn't stain. I must also mention that I think they may have modified their recipe for this product... I had bought it initially in the summer of 2012 and I found it really difficult to scrub off the product off of the skin and sink but I recently gave it another try and it's completely different - it's easy to rinse of the skin, doesn't get stuck in pore like it used to. It's worth a try if you have skin that could use a nice exfoliating scrub!

I have had a combination of oily and dry skin since forever, and although I've tried MANY different products and wasted a ton of money on useless products that claimed to solve my acne problems, this is the only one that has showed significant change over a small period of time. I love that this is made for combination skin, so it removes the oil on my face but doesn't dry it out completely, as most products tend to do. As well, it exfoliates your skin a bit but it is not very harsh at all. At first, I thought it was quite messy to use but after a while, you get the hang of it. I'm glad I asked for a smaller amount of it at first because it does last for a while. While some people are bothered by the smell, I don't mind, because it has really helped even after using it for just a few weeks! I usually use it after I get home from school and take off my make up, just once per day because it can dry out your skin too much if you use it too often. I found that the best thing to use after cleansing with Dark Angels is to use Skin Drink to add a bit of moisture. I love this product so much, I don't know what I would do without it!

I worried that this one might be too rough for my sensitive skin, but I was absolutely amazed. My skin hasn't been this clear since I was a kid! If you have oily or combination skin, or suffer from under-the-skin pimples, do yourself a favour and pick this one up.

I have always been skeptical about Lush products, but I decided to take a chance this past weekend. I am glad I did!
My skin is generally quite dry, except my face which can get quite sweaty and oily. In my 30's I still get horrible breakouts.
Dark Angels exfoliated well and left my skin very soft. I have used this product both at the sink and in the shower and have not had any problems with it being messy. I followed with a gentle toner and am pleased with the results.

I'm in my 20's and have sensitive acne prone skin, as a ginger with freckles and acne I turn into a red and pink spotted nightmare if my skin care products arent just right.

Yes this product can be messy, but it absorbs oil without drying and exfoliates. During the summer I use it every other day in the shower and alternate with Aqua Marina, in the winter I use it twice a week alternating with Fresh Farmacy. Its important to use a toner with this product, just to make sure all traces are removed. If you have acne you have to moisturize! No if ands or buts.

I love this cleanser! It exfoliates like no other, leaving my skin bright, smooth, clean, etc. And you only need a pea size every time ! I am in love!

P.S. I don't think I would recommends this to anyone with duper duper dry or sensitive skin, the exfolitating may be to harsh...

This stuff is AMAZING. Perfect for my teenage skin. I'd tried Herbalism and Angels on Bare Skin but neither of those gave me the 'clean' feeling that this does. I must admit, the scent isn't for everyone. Kind of like black liquorice without any sweetness to it.. But luckily I love that smell. And oh my god. It is SO FUN to use. Easier in the shower, definitely.

I found something helpful out while using it, too. If you, like me, found that you couldn't get a bit of the blackness off afterwards, use it with a facecloth every single time (one you don't mind getting a bit messy). Scrub your face lightly with a cloth while removing it, and it'll usually take off the excess much better than just your hands and water can.

This stuff saved my skin! If you feel some of the other cleansers aren't quite cleansing you properly, give this a try.

I honestly have to say that I have extremely problematic skin, and tend to break out all the time. In terms of its effectiveness with acne, I'm not quite sure yet, as i've been using it for a little over a week, and I don't think I'm seeing any outstanding difference; in fact, I have broken out a bit on my forehead.
I'm not sure if that's because of the cleanser, or because it's that time of month, school just started, and i just began a very intense hot yoga workout.
Aside from the zits though, it makes my skin feel fantastic, and it doesn't get oily at all throughout the day. It's a great cleanser in general, and I use it with the tea tree toner and the enzymion moisturizer, as recommended to me by the woman who was helping me at the time.
Already, I like it better than the Proactiv system I was using before, which just seemed to aggravate my acne.
Also, I noticed that a LOT of people consider this cleanser to be very messy, but I beg to differ. It's actually pretty simple, and if you apply it the way you're supposed to, it doesn't give any problems at all. All you have to do is put a small chunk of the cleanser in your hand, and add a little water, so it has a paste-ey texture, and then apply it to your face, as you would a mask. And then scrub and wash! It's a lot easier than it sounds, so I'd really recommend at least giving it a shot.

The first couple times I used it, it was great! The third time I used it in the shower and when I came out my face in neck were covered in black grime! It looked like I was working the day in a coal mine. I had to wash my face with another cleanser to get rid of it. It works great for occasional exfoliation to get rid of dead skin cells, but not something I would use everyday. It is a great cleanser though! The first time I used it my face felt so fresh and clean, but I think it's irritating my skin, maybe I scrub too hard.
The scent is actually horrible, it's like really strong black licorice. I could not breathe the first time I used it because it was so strong.

I would recommend this in small quantities for use once or twice a week, but no more.

I've been using this every day and night for about three weeks now because my acne around my chin was getting unbearably bad, which is weird as I just turned 20 and my skin wasn't this bad in high school, however the rest of my face was doing pretty great, so I thought I needed to bust into lush and see what kind of acne products they had. I've tried Coalface before but I just didn't love the bar format, and it left my face just slightly too tight, and since I use a scrub every day I thought this would be perfect. So far I must admit that as a clearing agent for my spots it hasn't helped thaaat much, however my breakouts are finally coming out of my skin (they were beneath the skin before), so that might be for the best and I'm going to stick with this. On the other side, the parts of my skin that weren't spotty look and feel fantastic since I've started using this. It's made having those spots a lot more bearable since their canvas just looks so darn good! I'm pretty happy with this. I thought people were exagerating when they said this was messy for sink use, but no, they're not, it does make a mess. I also find in the shower its a lot harder to make sure I've got it all off my face, sometimes I come out with dark marks. Another thing I haven't seen addressed in any reviews is that this stains the underside of my nails black in some spots! Frustrating. Overall I am quite happy with this product, and will likely stick with it for a while to see if its helping clear out my under skin acne.

I only use this in the shower, as it is really messy. In fact, it makes my shower look dirty after use and requires a bit of scrubbing to get it off. I'm not crazy about the smell (honestly smells like dirt), but I wanted something that would cleanse, exfoliate and help with blemises, which this does perfectly. Just make sure to rinse well!

I really wanted to like this product, but it just didn't work for me. First and foremost, it's awfully messy- washing it off with water doesn't do the trick. Literally, you have to use another cleanser to get all of the residue off of your face. And, don't get me started on the mess it makes in my shower. The messiness of this product isn't the only problem that I have with it ,unfortunately. The day after I used this product, I started breaking out like crazy and it was probably the worst breakout I've ever had. I will not be repurchasing this product & I will probably throw it out within the next few days. Very unfortunate that I spent a lot of money on this product and that it live up to my expectations.

This scrub has helped me so much! I have oily skin and was acne-prone in my youth, so from time to time I still get break outs. This makes me feel SO CLEAN, it strips the oil but doesn't leave your skin raw and dry, my cheeks are so soft.
Definitely a heavy exfoliant, but if that's what you're going for it's perfect! If you were looking for a softer exfoliant, I'd reccommend Angels on Bare Skin instead. LOVE THIS SCRUB, changing my life. My skin's never glowed so much.

I got this as a sample and I love it. It has the texture of Angels on Bare Skin which I really like and the excellent exfoliating property of Ocean Salt (but doesn't dry out your skin like Ocean Salt because there is no alcohol in it). What a perfect combination! It can't get any better. I have really dry skin and this is supposed to strip away all the oil so I don't know if it's necessarily good for my skin. But I don't care, I can use Skin's Shangri La moisturizer after.
Yes it's a little messy but you will get over it, just be extra careful. And there is really no residue like many people say so don't worry, they justprobably didn't rinse well.

I got quite a large sample of this from my local lush along with other products. And I have been looking for another cleanser for a while. I have acne prone skin that is very oily by the afternoon, however it is also combination and can be quite dry in certain areas during certain times of the month.
This cleanser cleans well, removes make up and soaks up excess sebum. HOWEVER exfoliating with little granules can irritate the skin leaving it red in certain areas and also increase bumps and acne. This is a lesson I learned when I was younger which leads to wanting to exfoliate more to get rid of the acne and then the vicious circle continues....
If this works for you, or granules in your scrubs are an asset to your cleansing regime then great! But if you're anything like me, then stay far far away from this guy!
I will be testing the other cleansers such as Fresh Farmacy and hopefully Coalface (assuming it's powdered charcoal isn't too grainy) and will let you all know how those go.
