Caca Noir Mama
How to use How it's made
1. Cut henna up into small pieces and put in a heatproof bowl. 2. Add hot water and let steep. Mix to a yogurt-like consistency. 3. Put on gloves and apply from back to front, coating hair thoroughly. 4. Cover in cling wrap for a more vibrant red. Leave on for one to six hours. 5. Rinse, shampoo, and condition hair. Tips: Always do a strand test first. Use face cream (or Ultra Bland) around your hairline and ears to protect skin. Wrap hair in cling film for a redder color. For darker, richer colors, leave on longer (up to six hours).

Mysterious blue-black hair color treatment

The darkest of our henna blocks, Caca Noir is made from a blend of the finest Persian henna and deep blue indigo hues to leave hair soft, glossy, and deeply conditioned. If you have dark hair, you’ll end up with a rich blue-black tint that blends magnificently with reddish hues. As with all our hennas, the more frequently you use Caca Noir, the more the color will intensify. After the first use, expect your hair to turn several shades darker. However, to truly release your darker side, keep applying every 4-6 weeks.

Features

  • For hair as dark as possible: Best suited to dark hair to create a mysterious blue-black gloss.
  • Which way do you go?: Air dry for a bluer finish, or wrap in cling film for a redder glow to your locks.
  • Feeling blue: Real indigo is made from the leaves of the indigo herb and has a history of use in traditional dyeing techniques.

I have been dying my hair with the box stuff and going to professionals for almost 10 years now. The last time I dyed my hair I went black, then I wanted to go a slightly lighter colour but couldn't get the black out so instead had reddish band of colour where my natural roots were. Yikes! So I went to Lush to find out if this henna would fix it without harming my hair (which fyi was crying for help!). The Sales lady was super helpful and explained some stuff I didn't know yet like not using metal because the henna can react with it!

So instead of grating it (like many people on here suggested) I broke off 2 pieces, placed in a ziploc bag placed on a wooden cutting board and smashed with a hammer. To me I think this was the easiest thing to do, all the henna was in a bag then all crumbled with no possibility of metal slivers being incorporated and not all over the place! Then I made red raspberry tea and added it to make a paste. I kept the bowl with the henna in a larger bowl with hot water to keep it nice and warm. Then I plastered it all over my head, focusing on my roots, and wraped my head in clingwrap and left on for 5hrs.

When I washed it out I didn't just go into the shower, I bent over the bath tub faucet and worked it out that way. So much easier because of the higher pressurized water stream. Then after the water ran clear I towel dried my hair (note only rinsed out my hair no shampoo or jungle). Then after waiting another hour or so I jumped in the shower and washed with reincarnate and used jungle to get the rest of the mud out.

So far I am impressed my hair is soft, shiny and completely coloured. The final colour is pretty close to black and shimmers red tints in the sun! I can't wait to do this all over again and I can't wait to experiment with some mixing of other hennas especially the red one!!! Love this product and thanks to all the reviews online they gave me lots of tips!!! Thanks Lush!!!

I've been using henna and indigo for years to colour my hair. I cannot believe how much easier the lush product is to mix and use. The smell is even better. I left it in for three hours, uncovered. Unfortunately it took FIVE washes over three days to get my hair to stop feeling like I had glue in it as a result of the cocoa butter. I waited 24 hours before attempting a wash, but my hair quickly went from almost-black to dark brown. Three weeks later and it is pretty much entirely faded. I'm hoping repeated applications will help the colour because I really wanted that almost-black I had originally obtained. Since I cannot tolerate chemical dyes, I will probably continue to use this product.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

This really helped me after I had over-processed my hair. My hair feels a million times healthier and it blended really well with my previously dyed black hair. It gave me very very dark brown hair with a hint of red natural highlights in direct light, but it was dark enough to blend seamlessly with dyed black hair. My hair is shiny, strong and has stopped breaking since I last chemically dyed my hair four months ago. I didn't want to dye my hair back to its natural hair color, chop it all off or have an awful grow out phase so switching to Lush henna was really the best possible solution for my tired hair. The cocoa butter in Lush henna made it a lot smoother to apply and rinse out than other hennas and was great for conditioning. Can't recommend Lush henna highly enough if you're looking to transition away from harsh dyes- or just want a very rich and natural looking very dark brown hair color!

Yes it's messy and yes it's time consuming, but my hair feels fabulous, looks good - not just me but other's comments/compliments. I tend to leave it on as long as my neck can take it(8-9 hours) and mix 2:1 noir:brown and am perfecting my prep/application process so it's getting a little less messy with time.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

I was not expecting miracles, I did not get any. What I did get was an ideal solution to my overdyed hair. I have greys and have been colouring for about 20 years. Too much! I had this block of Caca Noir for ages and finally used it yesterday. If you've ever used regular henna, then you know what I mean by "that smell". This is only about 1/3 (1/4) as pungent. Really not too bad. I grated it first (seems good, I would do that again the next time). Apparently adding a little salt makes it adhere better to grey hair, so I added about 1 spoon to 2 blocks of henna. My hair is about shoulder length and 50%++ grey. Did not drip and was not messy during the waiting period. I baked and watched TV and got my husband to walk the dog for me (yet another benefit of the product!). Rinsed it in the shower after 5 hours. Washed and conditioned, nothing special. Hair came out soft and natural looking. Much more so than with the chemical dyes I've been doing every 6-8 weeks. Of course, this lacks the intensity of chemical dyes, but that can be expected. My hair was toned and coloured from a grey/reddish/brown/streaky ugh to a really lovely blackish/brown colder colour. The greys that are not 100% covered are blended nicely, hardly noticeable as such. That was yesterday, and the since then the colour has darkened even further. I intend to do another 2 blocks in a week to further intensify the colour. I love that my skin and scalp are not reacting/painful. I feel like I did my hair a favour for the first time in a long long time. This is something I would recommend for those who are greying and are trying to keep up on that.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

My mom has black hair with lots of grey hair. She also has really fine, fragile hair so she can't use regular dyeing, permanent or any chemical treatments without loosing half of her head (little overstatment here but you get the point). So when I came accross this product I thought it will be the perfect solution for her. I was WRONG! Her hair turn GREEN! Not like an subtle hint of green but like an OBVIOUS GREEN! She washed it like crazy but it didn't help. Even after more than 10 months now, it is still almost the same color... And guess what, you cannot really dye on top cause it won't work. And also, the smell was kind of bad and lasts for a couple of days. If it was me, I don't think this will bother me that much if I'd love the overall product and color in my hair, but here, this is just an other cons... Normally, I love LUSH products, but I'm sorry to say that, this one suits well his name : Caca, which means poo in french... :(

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

So I've read multiple reviews from most of the cacas and finally decided to take the plunge. I'm asian, so my hair is already dark, but I really need to cover greys and was concerned about continued use of chemical dyes.

I used half the product (about 3 squares), even though my hair is longish (past the shoulders), it's rather fine. So i really only needed 2 squares. So that's helpful info for next time.

I put half the bar through the food processor, but a biggish clump about the size of a quarter, but about a half inch thick was left, and I was too impatient to wait for it to shred up. It all melted and combined just fine even with the big clump.

The mixture was a bit thick, next time I'll add more water to thin it out. I actually applied the mixture in the kitchen, over the kitchen sink (to make for relatively easy clean up), and finished up the rest in the bathroom. I left it on for about 3.5 hours. When I finally rinsed it out, big clumps of muddied products were in the drain. My hair had an oily texture, and grassy like scent. I didn't want to risk losing colour to I tied it up into a braid and left it as it. I waited almost 24 hours to wash my hair again. After washing, my hair is incredibly soft, and most of the greys are covered. I'm pretty happy with the result after 1 use, but will try this again next weekend to finish the treatment. I'm looking forward to future applications, and praying to the henna gods that the colour will keep for a long time.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

After living chemical free and being a huge fan of many, many Lush products for years, I finally took the plunge and tried the Caca Noir. I have naturally dark/black short hair and just a few greys on close inspection.

Before starting, I slatherd a film of petroleum jelly on my ears and around my whole hairline to avoid staining and drips, but I wouldn't have had to do this, I had no drips, it easily wiped off my skin at the hairline without staining at all, I only had color exactly where I wanted it. I broke off one of the six cubes from the brick, put it in a small glass jar, doused it with boiling water, and smooshed it up with a wooden chopstick, smooshing as I went and adding a bit more hot water. Before long I had a wonderful thick paste. I put most of it into a squeeze bottle to easily apply to roots. I applied it working it in with a glove, and slopped the remaining mixture from the jar onto my head and smoothed it all down, and wiped my hairline with a tissue to have an even edge, no stains from it in that short time at all. One cube was plenty for my short hair. SO simple, easy and mess free to mix and apply! I found this much cleaner and easier to work with than chemical dyes, it washes off my hands fine and it has a pleasant herbal, earthy smell, so much nicer than chemicals. I misted it with water and a little apple cider vinegar about 20 minutes in so it didn't dry so fast and I've read that the vinegar helps the henna to release the color. I went about my day at home with no mess, no drips or staining anywhere. Four hours later I rinsed it out in the sink. Again, no real mess anywhere, not even the tools I used to mix it.

Because I wasn't changing my haircolor there is not a noticable difference in color. It isn't a blue black on my hair it's warmer. My hair looks and feels great, and no irritation anywhere.
I can't speak yet for how long it'll last, but using just one sixth of the bar each time it's affordable and simple and gentle to use often. I really like that I can control how much I use each time too, most hair colors come with way more product than I would use and it's a waste of money. This way I only use as much as I need and it goes farther.

LOVE this product, and I'll be a lifetime user! Now Lush, please make a hairspray and a sun protection lotion! I realize a labelled SPF value can't happen without animal testing, but then just don't give it an SPF value. Those are the two things I really need to add to my Lush collections!

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

Just wanted to say this black is 'cold' black. Bluish undertone (not showing), not brown. Inky black.... plus some tips.

My hair: Asian, thick, but bleached 5 times almost to ivory!

I used two henna colours: half of my hair (above half) this Caca Noir, and the bottom half Caca Marron. So this is what I realized after my first try, then did do for my second application and found helpful.

        Tips:
... shredding the henna blocks makes the whole process ALOT EASIER. If you have blender or mixer, USE IT.
... put extra water, slightly waterier than brownie consistency was much better, making application easier. After all it never stay watery as it sorta dries up. Don't hesitate putting extra water.
... my hair is just above-chest, normal thickness, I used 7 blocks in total and used all (if your henna gravy is thick, it won't spread well)
... I personally never found my hair feeling smoother or shinier but I was happy with my scalp not sore.

Make sure to remove bathroom mats, I did everything in the bathtub and when I'm done I wrap my whole head with grocery plastic bags, went to sleep. After 6 hours or so, colours turn out pretty nice.

I love dying my hair with henna products because they give me a new hair colour that looks absolutely natural. However I have now become allergic to my own hair! after I had the product on, my neck and face began to itch whenever my hair would touch it. And even a week after a can't have my bangs touch my forehead unless I want to turn bright red. Remember to do a test before applying, this reaction was more subtle when I used the caca brun so maybe I'm allergic to the indigo...

I used to be a hair stylist, (quit because I became pregnant and didn't want to be around chemicals.) I had huge doubts about this product and low expectations. After the application process, and the mess - I was certain I wasn't going to like this product. Then, my gloves looked like they were turning green and got really scared. But I decided to leave it on for 4 hours and just give it a chance.

Anyway, my color and condition turned out SO NICE. It is a beautiful black color with warm burgandy/blue hues in the light. And the *shine* is incredible! I've never seen even the professional brands gloss your hair this much. I'm in disbelief. I am dreaming?! I almost cried because I LOVE MY HAIR SO MUCH. It's been so long since I've loved my hair so much. I just can't believe that a natural product could do such amazing things for your hair! I'm in shock. And at the same time I feel so guilty for not using this years ago, and not exposing myself to all those horrendous chemicals. I will never stop using this product for as long as it is available - hopefully forever. :)

        Please carry Caca Noir forever.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

I have used several other henna hair dyes, and this one is by far the best! I have naturally light-medium brown hair, and after having used harsh chemical dyes I switched to natural ones.

Because this one comes in a bar, I find it easy to portion out how much I need to use (one square will usually cover my roots, and the rest can be saved).

The added moisturisers also make a huge difference in the condition of my hair after colouring. It's also *much* easier to wash out than other hennas which don't contain any additional moisturisers.

The smell is not overpowering, and usually diminishes after a few washings.

The colour is also lovely - I leave it on for a 2-3 hours (uncovered) and I get a very dark, rich brown (not quite black).

This is how I prepare it:
          - cut it into chunks and place in a non-metal bowl
          - add boiling water and cover the bowl for a few minutes to allow the product to soften
          - mix it to a pudding consistency
          - apply it with gloves and/or a spatula

I also find that the longer the henna stays wet, the richer the colour will be (although a thinner consistency can be trickier to apply).

          Overall fantastic!

[$] is down the drain. This has to be the worst product that Lush has ever come up with. Generally, they do make some pretty decent stuff, though it's pretty pricey. I'd rather put chemicals in my hair than to use this henna product. If any of you are extremely sensitive to strong scents, use caution!!! This stuff really smells bad and on top of that, it doesn't work!

I usually have dark brown hair but being out in the sun all summer long turned it pretty light. Missing my darker color, and after a long debate with myself I decided to try Caca Noir.
My first attempt went well except I didn't use enough of the block, if you have a thick-medium length mop use at least three segments. I left it in for 5 1/2 hours and did see a color difference. I did it again the next day and left it in for 7 1/2 hours and did not cover it. Beautiful results!

Okay, this caca is messy to apply but worth it.

After 3 or so weeks I still have that earthy henna smell in my hair which i don't mind at all.

I'm not sure why but I can now get away with washing my hair only twice a week, even with sweaty workouts most days.

The conditioning effects of this product alone makes it worth trying. I am going to Caca my hair every two months just to keep it soft and healthy looking.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

I have been chemically colouring my hair for years and overtime have developed a severe allergic reaction to hair dye, unfortunately right about when i really started to need it to cover my grey hair.

I decided to use caca noir, i did a strand test for 4 hrs and the next day did a full head application, I covered it with saran wrap and a towel and left it on overnight (12 hrs). It covered the white hair although they are not black they are no longer a sparkling white but rather blondish, light brown and blend in to the rest of my much darker hair.

I have gotten great comments on the hair colour and would highly recommend it to anyone having allergic reactions to regular dye.

Thank you LUSH for allowing me to look younger for many more years to come.

PS; I grated it with a fine cheese grater to make it easier to blend and found it easy to apply and to wash out. I have shoulder length thick hair and used only 2 squares. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this product!!!

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

It took a while to prepare and apply--it pays to be thorough. Also, it really does smell terrible, both during application and after it had been completely rinsed out and dried. But that can be remedied by perfume, and it results in gorgeous color. My hair turned a soft black, and about two months later, the color is gradually fading back to my natural medium/light brown. It looks so natural and lovely, it's worth the initial annoyance.

I used to dye with Loreal Natural Match but hated the fact it had so many chemicals plus peroxide. I tried lush Noir...It covered my asian hair into pitch black. Also due to dye I felt I was loosing hair which stopped with henna. I dont get any more clumps of hair during shower. The color is permamnently fixed on my hair. I now stock it as I do henna every week as my hair grows fast. It doensot leave any smell once I have rinsed of with shampoo....I will never ever use any other dye ...I hope Lush makes this forvever ..infact they better!!!!

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

I've used Henna before, but those were possibly of questionable quality. They never did much for my hair either, which is already black. I read through all of the reviews prior to using this product and was excited to try it.

I grated three squares for my medium-long hair. I poured very warm water and two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into the powder. In retrospect, I should have used more water. During application, it clumped up a lot and seemed to dry quickly. I also made the mistake of not sectioning off my hair prior to application.

The henna has a strong odour but I really like it. Also, it's messy, but not horribly so, and it cleans up easily.

I wrapped my hair in clingfilm, blowdried it to generate some heat, and left it on for about four hours. I washed it out using water and a bit of conditioner. The cocoa butter is very present!

In the morning my hair was still greasy, so I washed it gently with one of my Lush solid shampoos. Most of the cocoa butter came out.

There's not much of a colour difference - I think I see a bit of blue? Although I had hoped for red. My hair is very soft and shiny, though, and it smells good. I think I'll do the rest of the bar soon, who knows, maybe I'll get some of that red going.

Overall, thumbs up, although by no means would I do this on a regular basis.

Caca Brun would give you the dark, chestnut result you are looking for. The Caca Noir, on the other hand, would give your hair a black tone.

I simply rinsed the product, my greys are less noticeable after one application, but will try again this weekend to see if I can get better coverage (I only used half the bar, or 3 squares), and could have gotten away with 2 squares.

I find that the Cacas need to be shampooed out due to their thick texture. As for grey coverage- we don't recommend trying the Les Cacas on hair that is over 40% grey. It may be very difficult to get greys to go dark, as the indigo doesn't have colour to layer on top of. Do a strand test to see how your hair's greys will take the colour, and you may want to try a repeated application to get better adhesion of colour.

It's best to apply the Cacas to hair that is clean, but dry, so it can absorb as much of the mixture as possible. I'd recommend shampooing in the morning, and then in the evening of the same day, perhaps, apply the Caca if that suits you? If you aren't able to shampoo in advance, it's alright- the results will not be negatively impacted.

If your hair is significantly lighter than your natural shade, you may not be able to achieve an immediate dark result with this product. I'd recommend doing a strand test to see how your hair works with the Caca Noir, and you may need to play with the length of time to leave it on longer to get a deeper shade. Since Les Cacas are great for the hair's health, you can also continue to reapply whenever you'd like, and this may help to layer and deepen the shade as well.

If this product is applied to blonde hair, the results may end up greenish. We do not recommend using the Caca Noir on light coloured hair, and you should always perform a strand test before using any of the Les Cacas hair hennas.

The results will likely be that the hair is nice and shiny, without any drastic colour changes. You may see a very subtle bluish tone, and I'd recommend performing a strand test before application to see if you like the colour.
