Caca Brun Mama
How to use
1. Cut henna up into small pieces and put in a heatproof bowl. 2. Add hot water and let steep. Mix to a yogurt-like consistency. 3. Put on gloves and apply from back to front, coating hair thoroughly. 4. Cover in cling wrap for a more vibrant red. Leave on for one to six hours. 5. Rinse, shampoo, and condition hair. Tips: Always do a strand test first. Use face cream (or Ultra Bland) around your hairline and ears to protect skin. Wrap hair in cling film for a redder color. For darker, richer colors, leave on longer (up to six hours).

After deciding to go blonde and overprocessing my hair for about a year, I decided to go back to my natural brunette roots.

I hadn't subjected my hair to any salon processing for 3 months, and after reading reviews I felt confident that my hair wouldn't turn green. I did not do a strand test, and while my hair turned out great, I would recommend a strand test to anyone else! I am just too impatient, and I though 6 hours was long enough to wait for pretty brown hair.

I did the whole process twice - once on a Friday, and the second on Saturday. The first time, I grated the henna with a metal grater and mixed it by hand in a small casserole dish. I filled the bathroom sink with hot water and placed the dish inside to keep it hot.

I purchased a highlighting cap and brush, but made the henna a little too thick to use the brush. I put down a few dark purple towels to catch the mess. I immediately washed them with a full load, and the henna washed right out.

After covering my shoulder-length hair with 1/2 of the full brick, I waited 6 hours, covering my hair with the highlighting cap. I used a little bit of Tramp shower jel to wash my hair after rinsing, which I would skip in the future. I think a little bit of conditioner or just water rinsing would have been fine.

The result was very nice - but not exactly what I was looking for. My hair was almost completely bleached blonde, and while the henna offered good coverage, I felt I needed one more treatment to get the full effect. With a cold keeping me home from work and the house to myself all weekend, I had plenty of time to repeat the process.

The next morning, I repeated the process but made some adjustments.

I again grated the henna with a metal grater. This time, however, I used my kitchenaid mixer with the whisk attachment to blend the henna to perfection. I read in other reviews that henna may react with metal, but decided to go for it anyway. I added a little more water this time, and found it much easier to work with.

I used the metal mixer bowl inside a large boiler filled with just-boiled water to keep the mixture warm. This was a lot more efficient, keeing the henna hot to the touch. I was able to use the highlighting brush with the thinner product, and it provided great coverage. I found several blonde areas in my hair that I had missed with the thicker henna mixture.

I used cling wrap the second time and it was much more comfortable. I even pulled a winter hat on over my head and went to the grocery store! The only downfall to adding a little extra water was that the henna verrryy slooowly dripped out of the back of my head. A thin black scarf did the trick for me, catching all the little drips and protecting my favorite lounging shirt.

I waited the requisite 6 hours again. I planned to wait longer, but I just couldn't wait to see my hair! I used conditioner after rinsing this time to lightly scent my hair... not that the henna smelled bad. To me, it smells like green tea. But who wants hair that smells like green tea!

The results? Fabulous. My hair is a warm dark brown and very natural looking. Before, my hair was very had to comb from multiple harsh treatments, and I missed having healthy, shiny hair. I have that back now, thanks to Les Cacas!

I cut some corners and got lucky, so again, you should do a strand test! I found the other reviews very helpful, which compelled me to share my experience. I hope this helps a fellow Lush addict obtain the beautiful results that I did.

Thanks Lush! I will use this product again and again - but I hope the colour lasts for a while. I wouldn't want to have to repeat the whole process too often.

I was one that got the green hair the first time I tried this. I really think LUSH needs to rewrite the instructions for this one. Both dyes with indigo in them (brun and noir) need to sit at least 3 hours on your head in order for the indigo to develop from green to brown/black. The first time I used this I only let it sit for an hour because I did not want to be too dark. I then covered over my gren for the next year with rouge and even then you could see the green through it on occasion. I finally got up the courage to use it again after much research. Let it sit for 4 hours. Beautiful brown and shiny. Good product, but LUSH needs to step up and make the instructions better. They are fine for rouge an marron, but deffinatly need changing for the other two.

Love my Caca Brun! Great conditioning and strengthening product. If you want your hair to grow, just use it.

Just a thought for blonds and those on the lighter side, please consider making just a henna and cassia obovata bar. This would include blonds and lighter red heads in your repetoire of colour.

I love how strong it makes my hair. It makes my hair grow really fast. Fortunately the mess cleans up fairly easily. The only suggestion I could give to lush is to create a Cassia Obovita bar. This would give the same great conditioning without any colour.

Comments about LUSH Caca Brun Mama:

Before applying the henna, my shoulder length hair had 6 weeks of roots coming in after deciding I had had enough of chemically coloring my hair with blonde highlights (my natural color is a mousy brown with some grays). I was scared at first to use the henna and worried that the previously colored hair would take less color than the roots growing in (I'm not a fan of two toned hair,ya know?). I was AMAZED at how even the coverage was! After use, I have beautiful brown hair. To note, the grays did not color that well after the first application. But, after a follow up application 5 weeks later, my grays are now beautiful copper highlights.

My hair is now chin length and I use 2 squares, mixed with hot coffee and some boiling water until the consistency of a thick yogurt. I leave it in for 4 hours with a plastic shower cap. To remove, I soak it under the tap first while in the shower, add conditionner, one round of a natural shampoo and follow up with another round of conditionner. Great results!

I am SO happy that I took a chance on this product and can't recommend it enough.

Comments about LUSH Caca Brun Mama:

I give this product 5 stars because the result is amazing. Yes it's messy and time consuming but every henna hair dye application is going to be. I mixed it with green tea instead of water (there is many ways to mix henna just look on google) and left it on for 4 hours. I didn't wrap my hair in cling film so that way the henna (red pigment) doesn't develop so much and it give you less red undertones. The color came out as a beautiful rich chocolate brown which is exactly what I wanted. My hair felt really harsh when if was rinsing the henna off but once it dried it was really soft, shinier and thicker. I love this product def going to buy it again.

Comments about LUSH Caca Brun Mama:

I did write a 1-star review for Rouge after using it to restore my natural fading red hair only to end up with a very bright orange result. I drove 4 hrs to my nearest LUSH store where it was suggested I try Brun to deepen the colour, hide the orange and leave some red undertones. For some reason, the Brun turned my hair a very VERY dark brown colour (as close to black as you can come without actually being black). I have celtic skin tones, and since there was not really any red coming through the Brun, it left me with a goth appearance (and left my family laughing in hysterics). The look may have worked if I was 30 years younger! So...back to LUSH I went. Let me start by saying the 2 girls working in the Halifax Shopping Centre store the morning of March 19 were incredibly helpful...this was my best shopping/customer service experience anywhere/in any type of store EVER! They happily took back the unused Brun (about half a bar) and suggested I go over my hair again with my leftover Rouge (they suggested a slightly thinner preparation than the instructions call for which is a bit messier but managable). They also suggested using saran wrap for just an hour then leaving it open to air for the remaining time. My hair was getting a bit weighted down with repeated exposure to the butters in the blocks so they gave me a sample of "I love juicy" to help shampoo out the excess. (nice surprise there...I LOVE the scent of that shampoo more than any of the others and would never have otherwise tried it because my hair isn't normally oily...(I'm a solid shampoo girl)). Anyways, in the end, my hair was incredibly soft, and ended up becoming a deep chestnut colour with really nice auburn throughout. I love the auburn (the chestnut is still a little dark for my skin but overall I have to say this is a great improvement to the orange and the near-black experiences). Three times a charm I guess! The Rouge smells better than the Brun, but even at that, I was Caca'd-out by the third time around so I slapped on some Karma beforehand to offset the odour issue. Bottom line, this has been quite a time-consuming lesson in discovering that henna colours will respond quite differently on different natural hair colours (a colour result for one person can be considerably different on someone else). I did strand tests for the 1st and 3rd colourings but didn't find them overly helpful in determining my end results). I picked up a bar of Marron to try next time with hopes it'll be closest to what I'm looking for. Hats-off to the 2 girls working at the Halifax store ~ you guys were great!! As always, I ended up picking up a few other great LUSH products while I was there!

Comments about LUSH Caca Brun Mama:

I have long brown hair and wanted to darken the colour just a bit. To make the product last me a while i only use 2 squares per use. I do not bother with the grater or the double boiler. I place the squares in the pot an poured boiling water over, i kept mixing until it became brownie mixture. After i apply the mixture to my hair i cover all the hair in plastic wrap. I leave it on for 2 1/2 hours and wash it out in the shower. The smell becomes very overwhelming when it starts to rinse out. I shampoo many times because the mixture is hard to get out!
The smell does stay in you hair for many washes and the green colour come out a when shampooed for about 3 washes after the dying.

I have dark brown/black hair but during the summer, some of the colour had faded and in the sun it looked really bleached out.

So I bought Caca Brun to give me an all-over even colour. I knew it really wouldn't change my natural colour too much but I also wanted to take advantage of the moisturizing properties of the product.

Yes, it was a messy process and no, the smell wasn't bad at all. Once I had wrapped up my head in saran wrap, I could not smell it at all - neither could my roomie.

It was actually a fun process - I would recommend getting a friend to help and then making a movie day of it.

Comments about LUSH Caca Brun Mama:

When i used this, instead of using hot water I used hot, strong coffee, which i think really helped bring out the brown color. I had red dye growing out from about 4 inches of roots, and this covered it all evenly. My hair feels really soft and my ends even look better already. Easiest way to break it up is to double ziploc bag, then bash it to bits with a rolling pin, it helps it melt and keeps it clump free. To keep it warm, i just placed the bowl in my sink and just poured boiling water around it. It is super messy, but it cleans up very easy and doesn't stain any surfaces. It did leave a residue in my tub, i think from the cocoa butter but it wipes off. I also washed my hair with conditioner when rinsing to help get all the plant bits out. Try not to use shampoo for a day or so, the color will continue to develop even when its not on your hair.

Comments about LUSH Caca Brun Mama:

I always get my hair done professionally and usually dye it close to my natural coolur - dark brown. it's been growing out and showing my grey so i asked for this for christmas. where i currently live even a root touch up cost 160 dollars and i thought this might be an alternative.

my hair is past my shoulders a few inches but fairly fine so i used just two blocks and it was plenty. i poured boiling water a little at a time over the blocks while breking them up with a fork. i mixed and mashed until it was yogurt consistency. i thinks that might even be thicker than necessary. next time i am making it more liquidy.

i used a dye brush around my face but it was hard to apply this way in this thickness. scooping it onto strands about an inch wide and smooshing it in from root to tip seems the best application method. i wrapped a platic bag aroubd my hair for 4 hours, rinsed out, washed twice and applied conditioner,

not a drastic change but a very nice uplifting one. hair feels so soft and colour is very pretty.

    cons:
this looks and smells a lot like fresh cow poop, heavy on the grass... its very green when mixed which was conerning

its gritty - it doesn't feel nice in your hair or while washing it out but like sand

messy! cover the sink and floor with something.

BOTTOM LINE: i would pay someone to put thiis in my hair and you need to have a good 5 hours to sit around smelling like poo with a bag on your head.

I searched online for a more natural way to colour my hair after many many years of chemical colours (both store bought and salon). My hair was dry and had a mix of old blond highlights that were covered in a new reddish brown colour that I found didn't really look natural and made my hair feel and look unhealthy. When I read the great reviews about the Lush Caca Brun I thought, why not. Yes, it takes a while and is a bit messy but I prepped my bathroom and also made sure to cover my hair with Saran Wrap and then an old towel to keep in all in place. Kept it on for 2 hours only and the result is a beautiful shiny brown! It's close to my natural color and the best part is that it feels great and healthy. So very very happy to have found this product and won't go back to chemical colouring.

I bought this product because I had bleach my hair blonde and dyed it back brown again but i had unwanted streaks in my hair that almost had greenness to them. I wanted to cover thoses streaks and this did the trick!

      Steps by step
      1. I put the whole block a plaset yet heat safe bowl and poured boiling water over it. My hair is really long so I used the whole thing. I didn't shave the product with a cheese grader because i read henna is bad to use with metal products.

      2. It melted in a yogourt like paste and sat in the bathtub.

      3. Applyed it all over my hair with rubber gloves.

      4. I wrap my hair in plasit wrap and cover it with a shower cap and slept with it in for 7 hours.

      5. In the morning I wash it all out with shampoo and conditioner (twice)

      6. Blowed dryed it and i had beautiful shinny hair.

      Pros
      Shinny healthy hair
      Not damaging to the hair
      Nautral Colour

      Cons
You can not bleach you hair untill with grows out! Henna doesn't remove easily so bleach it may cause your hair to go purple!

      Very Messy
Takes a long to to process
Some may be bother by the smell but i kinda like it

This colour is a gorgeous dark brown with the most beautiful soft red tones in the sunlight. I used to be a box dye junkie, but I am a total convert. Yes, it takes a bit of patience to use, but the results are totally worth it. I do mine before bed, wrap my hair in plastic wrap and put on a toque. This way the henna does it's magic overnight, and I get super vibrant colour without any fuss.

Comments about LUSH Caca Brun Mama:

After dyeing my hair chemically I decided I wanted to go back to my natural colour (dark auburn). My hair was a very light strawberry blonde/ginger and I was beginning to feel washed out. I wanted something natural that would be an easy transition to going back to my normal colour. At first I decided on Lush's caca Marron, the sales person said that if I went for caca brun that there was a chance it could turn green... Something I wasn't willing to do. I also wanted to remain a red head. I really think that caca marron was just a transition colour for me. It turned really red... and I just didnt like the colour at all. Some people really like the unnatural red, Im not one of them.

So four days later I used three blocks of caca burn, I made it a thick hot chocolate consistency. The directions say brownie batter but I think thats just not necessary. My hair is very long (to my hips) and medium thickness. When using caca marron I used the whole bar and made it brownie batter consistency. It was heavy, crumbly, and a waste of product if you ask me. Thats why I only used three blocks of caca brun. It covered my whole head and was far easier to wash out. I kept it in my hair for two hours, wrapped it in saran wrap and a towel as it is quite drippy. When washing it out I stuck my head under a warm tap and worked it out of my hair, I also used some conditioner.
Im soo happy with the outcome! Its just like my hair colour was when I was an eight year old. Its quite dark, but its a dark auburn which is what I wanted anyway! My hair feels so soft and manageable..
The process is really time consuming, its messy and it smells ghastly. But if you were like me, you want a natural way to colour your hair, this is the way to go. If you can get over how difficult it is, and the smell... You will be pleasantly surprised with the outcome!
If you want a bit to be red use saran wrap, but if you want to be brown don't use it. They are not lying when they tell you this.

          How I did it:

*Filled a medium sized pot half full with water.
*Put an oven safe ceramic bowl on top of the pot.
*Used a cleaver to cut three blocks of caca brun.
*Wrapped henna in a plastic bag and proceeded to smash it to bits with a hammer (grating isn't worth the energy).
*I added hot orange pekoe tea to help it dissolve quickly and help with the smell.
          *Cook until smooth.
          (Just like melting chocolate)

          Afterwards:

I put vaseline around hair line and on ears (sorry lush, this was cheaper and had the same affect).
I placed old news paper on the floor and vanity of my bathroom (your gunna want a mirror).
Worked the henna into my roots first, than the rest of my hair. (keep the henna as hot as you can bear it)
When finished I wrapped it in plastic wrap and then a towel.
Proceeded to watch a bones marathon for two hours.
Washed it out using hair conditioner to make it easier.
(Had to clean my tub really well afterwards)

(Tip... It dissolves really well in hot water)

          Done!

Im pleased with the outcome, I feel dark and mysterious again!

          Thanks Lush! <3

Comments about LUSH Caca Brun Mama:

I was sick of spending a lot of money every month to colour my greys, so I decided to try henna. I used 3 blocks (I might try 4 next time, I have shoulder length fine hair, but lots of it). I would probably grate or blend the blocks first as I spent a lot of time mushing up little clumps in the boiling water. I just went at it and started massaging the henna paste into my roots and then down the length of my hair (I'd make the paste a bit thinner next time, mine was pretty thick, and work by sections next time too, as I just kind of did my hair randomly). I then watched a movie and was too tired to let it sit any longer (2hrs) so I rinsed it out in the sink, which took about 15 mins. Yes, the grains are kind of annoying, but not a deal breaker for me, and yes there is a smell, but I'm pretty sensitive to smells and this one wasn't over powering at all. I loved how the colour turned out (it darkened my previously auburn hair to a richer brown with hints of auburn in the sun, and looked really natural). At first my hair had a green tinge under fluorescent lights, but that went away after a day. I am excited to use this product again and will leave it on longer next time to let the colour deepen more. Great product! I won't be going back to chemical dyes.

Comments about LUSH Caca Brun Mama:

So I just wrote a review for this product hardly over a week ago. At the time I reviewed it I LOVED it... that was a couple days right after I used the product... now it's been a week and a half - ish.
My hair looked great at the beginning.
              Now it looks... well, gross.
The beautiful, gorgeous, silky smooth color and texture I had is now totally gone. It's faded into this weird, gross, redish brown color - and it's REALLY patchy. For some reason my roots don't have color anymore, nor underneath my hair. But the top layers and bottom layers are this weird red color... and not a nice red tone... and obvious bad dye/faded color.
              I hate it!
And worst of all I can't DO anything about it unless redye it with henna or wait 6 MONTHS to dye it with chemical hair dye.
              So.
              There you have it, folks.
Looks good for a couple days and then looks like garbage. So unless you plan on buying it over and over again... I don't suggest it.

Comments about LUSH Caca Brun Mama:

I decided to color my hair not because I didn't like my natural color but because it was starting to feel unhealthy and I heard henna did wonders for hair. I had medium brown hair with chemical blonde highlights in it. I did a lot of research before using this product - mainly what the color would look like, and how to use it with chemically treated hair.
I'm a little disappointed with the color outcome because I read that the color would take to my blonde highlights and come out brighter and a lighter color than the rest of my hair - and it did, but not as drastically as everyone was saying. That being said.. I still LOVE the color of my hair. It's a dark dark chocolate brown with a slight red tint. I'm not too keen on red, but it works well with this color.
I left mine on for 3.5 hours because I read that - to be safe - any hair with chemical dye in it should leave the henna on for at least 3 hours to avoid turning it green. I also used coffee instead of hot water - to tone down the red. I saran wrapped my head so I could take a nap and do some house work while waiting.
The messiest part of the procedure was surprisingly washing my hair out. I mean, applying it was really messy too, but washing it out was much much more messy haha. As long as you prepare yourself for the mess it's not THAT bad. It's tolerable. And henna wipes up easy enough.
Oh, also people complain about the smell a lot but it's really just an earthy smell. I much prefer it to the smell of chemical dye... but the henna smell sticks to your hair a lot longer. If you don't mind the smell of hemp (imagine a really concentrated version) than you shouldn't have a problem with henna.

              Things I would do differently:
              - The instructions say "brownie batter consistency" which I did, but is totally impractical. It ends up clumping on your head and you use a lot more than you actually need to use. Next time I will water mine down a lot more because it would be SO SO much easier to apply that way.
              - I wouldn't use saran wrap - saran wrapping your head brings out the reds more and I don't really want the red tones as much as I have them
              - I would leave it on for less time - now that I know my hair won't go green!

Also I didn't do a strand test... but I got lucky!
All in all my hair looks and feels WONDERFUL. I can't stop running my fingers through it it's soooooo soft and silky. I never have shiny and healthy hair - I have seriously used almost every brand of shampoo trying to get there. But after using this my hair is seriously the best it has ever looked. Ever.
It's a bit of a procedure using henna.. BUT TOTALLY WORTH IT.
Definitely using this again and again and again and again and again.

Did the formula change on these? When i used to use Lush hennas, my hair felt wonderfully moisturized and soft after washing the product out. Now, while the colour is still fantastic, my hair feels dry and crunchy. I miss that lovely, thick, moisturized feeling. Change it back please!

Comments about LUSH Caca Brun Mama:

I hadn't ever dyed my hair before, and was nervous/excited about exposing my virgin locks to any type of colour. My natural colour is a medium-brown, and I was looking for a darker, espresso-type of colour - Caca Brun Mama did the trick!

                HOW TO:
I cut three sections into smaller bits and added a mix of warm water and dark coffee to it, creating a mayonnaise-like texture. I found that keeping a bowl of water next to me to dip my fingers in to smooth out the mixture just prior to application was very helpful. Using claw hair clips to clamp the already caca'd parts up was also very helpful. I let the mixture sit for approximately four hours, and got wonderful results!

                BEWARE:
The mud-helmet that you'll be sporting for a few hours gets quite cumbersome. You'll want to be somewhere that you can throw a towel down and give your noggin' a rest. Also, get the dust pan ready to clean up all of the rogue caca that makes it's way to the floor.

We do not recommend using our Les Cacas hair hennas on hair with more than 40% grays. We find that the indigo component in Caca Brun has a really hard time adhering to grays, particularly if there are many of them, and if they are resilient, so if you were to try Caca Brun, you might find that it won't take to the hair very well.

Henna can remain on the hair strand indefinitely, until it grows out in some cases, so to be on the safe side I'd recommend doing a good strand test before colouring with any type of chemical dye.

I had virgin hair up until last Saturday, when I tried Caca Brun! Once it had 24hours to settle, I was very happy with the colour. However, now that it's getting close to a week old, I'm less satisfied. At first, there was a subtle difference in my hair colour, but now (maybe I'm just used to it), it seems that it is barely different than it was before I dyed it.
Can I henna again now to boost the colour, or should I wait longer?

You can absolutely henna your hair again to boost the color. Depending on your hair, some people have a little more of a difficult time with the color taking, but feel free to do it again, and with the second treatment the henna will have more to adhere to. As always, we recommend a strand test first to make sure you are happy with the results.

                    A:

The reason we recommend testing Les Cacas on hair is because we want you to get an idea of what the colour will be on your hair, and the best way to do that is to see it in action on your real hair. If you were to do a test on the skin, unfortunately that wouldn't give you a very good idea of how the colour will look on your hair. So I'd recommend taking the hair from your hair brush, and applying a bit of the henna mixture, leaving it for a couple of hours, washing it off, and seeing if you like the results. If you aren't sure, or if you don't like the colour, refrain from doing a full application, and bring the rest back to the shop to talk about an exchange.

Our Caca Henna hair dyes are 100% natural! You can find a full list of ingredients on the page, and see what we include. There is no PPD, no peroxide, and no ammonia - just the henna, and a few extra ingredients like coffee and indigo to help give a rich deep brown, and nettle and seaweed, along with cocoa butter, to condition and add shine.

How long does it lasts? I currently have to dye my hair every 3 three weeks to cover the roots which are all grey.

Also, will it stain my pillow case, and does it wash out every time I shampoo leaving a mess in the shower?

PS love Curly Wurly and retread.!!

They are a semi-permanent colour, and will fade gradually over approximately 6 to 8 weeks. Be sure to shampoo afterwards thoroughly. If there is henna still in the hair that hasn't been fully washed out, when it comes in contact with the pillowcase, it may stain. You might want to use a dark coloured towel over your pillow the first night to be extra safe.

When it comes to using synthetic dyes after using henna, this can be very risky, especially if you are looking to lighten the hair. I've heard of instances where someone has tried to colour the hair blonde after using Caca Brun, and the result was green hair, which is definitely not the desired result! The key here is to make sure you wait at least a good 6-8 weeks after using the Caca Brun, and make sure that your hair colourist does a strand test ahead of time to make sure the result will be the colour you want.

The way henna works is that it coats the hair strand with a coloured varnish, and it seals the outer layer of the hair (the cuticle) which allows lots of shine, and keeps the hair protected from damage. When you use a synthetic dye, the hair's cuticle is pried open and colour is inserted within the hair shaft where it expands, and can damage the hair. Since henna only aims to colour the outside of the hair strand, what can happen when you use a synthetic dye afterwards, is that the henna colour may be pushed further into the strand making it harder to fade, or causing the colour to be different than what you'd like. The key here is definitely to do a strand test, and it's better to be safe than sorry! If you're worried at all that the colour won't be to your liking, avoid using a synthetic dye, and allow more time for the henna to slowly fade.

The Les Cacas are a semi-permanent colour, as they coat the hair strand, and will gradually fade after about 6-8 weeks. This can vary, particularly if the hair is porous beforehand, but generally over time, the colour will subtly fade. There's no harsh regrowth lines as there would be with a synthetic dye.
